An incredible all-rounder: In contrast to conventional vending machines, the new device not only sells sweets, but also offers numerous special functions. The so-called BMC Media Kiosk differs from other vending machines in that the user can put together an individual mix of sweets. The individual bag is then packed airtight and, if desired, printed with the ingredients of the selected varieties or information on nutrient content. With E2.1 e-chains, all the necessary functions can be implemented in the confined space available – with constant movement of individual cables.

Problem

The Canadian technology company BMC Universal Technologies has developed a vending machine of the future that can sell more than just sweets. With a 42-inch touchscreen and a 65-inch programmable display on the back, targeted advertising can be played. For example, on the basis of the customer data that the machine collects from its users. For example, the gender or age of the customer can be recorded and thus used for better targeting.
But the core of the machine is the inside: Instead of just choosing a specific product from a storage compartment, customers can have an individual package of ingredients dispensed together. The goods are sealed airtight in a bag in front of the customer – everything is clearly visible through a viewing window at the front. In addition, the user can have ingredients of the selected varieties or information on nutrient contents printed on them. The challenge was to guide the numerous cables inside the complex machine safely and in a space-saving manner.

Solution

Due to the various cables in the vending machine, which move in different directions, it was necessary to find an energy supply system that was as compact as possible. For example, in order to move the sealed bags with the sweets to the output compartment in continuous operation every day, many cables have to be moved safely. BMC Universal Technologies therefore decided to use several E2.1 e-chains, which both save installation space in the tightly spaced Media Kiosk and allow safe and failure-free cable routing thanks to its high stability. Thanks to narrow bending radii, the e-chains were also prevented from getting in each other's way. And another decisive advantage: Due to the large advertising spaces and the complex movements inside, the device needs a lot of electricity. To ensure that the innovative snack vending machine can still be connected to the power supply with a regular wall plug, the energy required to guide the cables must also be kept as low as possible.
