Service life up, costs down....

... that is the core idea of all igus® products and systems.
Plastics with their tested properties in durability, friction and stability form the technological core. How these properties come to the fore on iglidur® piston rings is explained by Sector Manager, Patrick Carl.
What distinguishes piston rings made of the iglidur® high-performance polymer? Patrick Carl: The wide range of iglidur® products means that every application can be given the right material and hence not only technically, but also commercially optimized. For example, continuous temperatures up to 250 °C and surface pressures up to 150 MPa are possible. Added to that is an almost universal chemical resistance.

Are there limits on the defined clearance? Patrick Carl: The behaviour of the respective material depends on the application. First of all the influences of temperature and moisture are calculated. This results in a minimum clearance. Clearance compensation can be partly achieved, however, by the design of the slot width.

Where does the customer save money? Patrick Carl: First of all the unit price is reduced: the piston ring "drops" ready made out of the injection molding machine. Secondly the time and money spent on installation is minimized. The piston ring is simply pushed over the piston and clips immediately into the groove.

Where are iglidur® piston rings used? Patrick Carl: In ball valves and shut-off valves, lifting elements and filling valves in the drinks industry and in various fittings. In addition, there is the benefit of the defined "clearance". Compared with soft PTFE tape, the iglidur® piston ring is not pushed away under load due to its durable shape.
