The GS series of machining centers from Alzmetall is characterized by high dynamics and precision; it is mainly used for demanding machining tasks in high-volume production, tool and mold making, prototype construction and in the aviation industry. Alzmetall has found a solution for the energy supply for the spindle that is both economically and technically beneficial: a pre-harnessed, ready-to-install e-chain system from igus®.
Two e-chain configurations were developed for the GS 650: a standard version and a second version designed for the high-performance spindle operating at up to 30,000 rpm, which requires additional cooling lines. The systems are assembled by igus in Cologne and delivered to Alzmetall in Altenmarkt on a just-in-time basis, ensuring efficient integration into the production process.
The system's modular design also allows additional cables and hoses to be added when required, even after installation. This flexibility was a key advantage for Alzmetall's design engineers, as future upgrades such as additional axes or minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) systems can be accommodated with minimal effort. Individual chain links can simply be opened, allowing new cables to be routed within dedicated interior compartments.
The preassembled readychain® systems arrive complete with cables, energy chains, and distribution boxes, requiring little more storage space than a Euro pallet before installation. Beyond the energy supply system, Alzmetall also relies on igus high-performance polymers in other areas of the machine. Self-lubricating polymer components, for example, are used in the tool magazine, where they contribute to reliable operation while reducing maintenance requirements.
