About the Memorial Bridge:
The Memorial Bridge spans the Piscataqua River on the east coast of the USA between Portsmouth in New Hampshire and Kittery in Maine. It replaced the original bridge, which was built in 1923 in memory of the local sailors and soldiers who died in the First World War.

Problem

To allow ships to pass under the Memorial Bridge, it has to be raised by a vertical lifting mechanism.
This requires an average speed of 1m/s over a total distance of 40m.

Solution

To reduce maintenance and increase overall reliability, the bridge builders used pre-assembled readychain system from igus.

They were used instead of the suspended cables from the original design. The harnessed cables with connectors were pre-assembled in the energy chain in the igus factory. Afterwards, they were delivered and installed directly on site as ready-to-install systems.

The igus technicians used highly flexible chainflex cables in the E4 energy chain and heavy-duty CFXL clamps for secure cable strain relief, ensuring easy access. Each type of cable installed was intensively tested in the 2,750m² test laboratory.
